Lazy Wizard – Lunatic Soup. "If you love great songcraft, love to wig out or rock hard, Lazy Wizard are easily your fave new band!!!"
Lazy Wizard – Lunatic Soup (self-released)
Melbourne trio, formed in 2025: Steve on drums, Jared on bass, Jau on guitar, tracked live at Incubator Studios. You may not have heard much press about them-but trust me-this is a ripping, rocking three-piece of sheer power. Think groovy, funky sludge that is equally doom-focused as it is embedded in wild psych rock.
Five deep and epic instrumentals, just over thirty minutes, built around a dystopian story: “Agenda 65+”, a law stripping rights from anyone over 65 who can’t pay. The band wrote it up as an interview with an old man called Nigel, who has rescued a dog named Pacols and is living with the consequences. Track titles follow the story, and at 9:19 “Chester” is the one that runs long.
Genres implicated in such tags range from stoner doom and heavy psych to funk and garage rock, which is a lot of ground for a trio this new. They’ve also stuck a disclaimer on it saying it’s fiction and hates no one. It’s a concept record without a vocalist, so the music has to carry the plot.
And they are an incredibly tight unit, lovely guys, and the extraordinary EP or album never slouches for one second.
If you love great songcraft, love to wig out or rock hard, Lazy Wizard are easily your fave new band!!!
Listen, buy the release and go see them live.
