 T-Rex Autopsy – Cygnus Atratus

Five tracks in, and this album has more creativity than some artists have in a 20-year career, which tells you almost everything you need to know about what T-Rex Autopsy are chasing here. They're calling it "world metal", and for once that's not a marketing dodge — Cygnus Atratus moves through moody, technical prog passages laced with Middle Eastern scale-work, folk detours that feel earned rather than bolted on, flashes of metalcore aggression, and solos that reach for the rafters without ever tipping into self-parody. Track titles nod to Ibn Sina, Alhazen, and Damascus one minute, then throw down something called "Heavy Metal Awesome Sandwich" the next — the humour is there. Still, it never undercuts the engrossing musicianship, which is genuinely immaculate throughout.

What makes this record land is the control. It's meditative and almost tranquil in stretches, then riff-heavy and suffocating in others, and the whiplash between those states is handled by a band that sounds like it's already spent a decade filling rooms it hasn't played yet. 

The vocals sit in that classic savage metal register, cutting through arrangements dense enough that a lesser band would've lost the plot by track six. This isn't something you'll spin every week — it asks too much of you for casual rotation — but it's never dull, and by the closing stretch it's hard not to admit you've just heard something genuinely singular. A hell of a debut statement.
