Distorta interview-the new kings of Australian Metal!!!
Distorta interview for Devil’s Horn’s Zine (Melbourne) by Mark Jenkins
If you missed the hot press this killer band from Ballarat are all you need in Aussie metal, killer vocals, insane riffs and top blokes!!!
Enjoy!!!
You have just dropped a sensational EP by the name of Deadman , tell us how this came about and the differences between this and your previous releases?
Thank You. I think we are just in a really good creative
space at the moment. Everyone is on the same page about what we want to achieve
and understand our roles. We have so many songs on the go at the moment and we
thought we better start releasing them. So we focused on the five songs you
hear on the album and crossed them off one by one. It was actually a lot fun,
with all of us involved in the mixing/recording process. We even did a weekend
away together to focus solely on this EP, which we had not done before.
2-
To someone that has never heard you before how the hell
would you describe your sound? And what bands have influenced you the most?
That's a tough question because every member of the band is
into different music. We all love metal obviously, but there are so many Genres
and styles that you really can't say just “METAL” and people know what you're
talking about. I think you can definitely hear some Maiden/Judas Priest etc in
the guitars, but the vocal side of things is much more modern. One band we all
agree on and love at the moment is Australia's own Parkway Drive, and they have
definitely influenced us. I can tell you what we love and aim for in our songs
without giving it a label and that is, Big Choruses with a hook, Loud Guitars,
Clean/extreme vocals, and a breakdown or guitar solo. Sometimes both. We don't
feel there are any limitations on what we can write, and are willing to try
whatever feels right.
4-
How do you seeing your music being an intersection with art,
be it album or merch art, music videos etc.?
Metal artwork has always been amazing and captivating. We
all grew up with Iron maiden, Megadeth etc posters on our wall and the artwork
was so cool. We are always looking to have cool artwork for our songs and even
T-Shirts etc, and really enjoy designing what we can.
5-
What is the lyrical focus of the band? Is there any
particular meaning or message?
I wouldn't say there is a particular focus but we certainly
write lyrics that mean something to us. We have written and will continue to do
so on topics such as mental health and depression, war and corruption, and a
big theme lately has been forgiveness and redemption. While they are all
serious issues we always try to be positive and focus on looking forward.
6-
What is current state of your local and national music
community or scene?
We are from a small regional city in victoria but the scene is pretty strong, and there are some amazing local bands here. There is a serious lack of support from councils and government in Victoria so the scene has to support itself, especially heavy metal bands. Fortunately the metal scene is a brotherhood and stick together to always help and support each other.
What do you think you can achieve creatively in live spaces that you can’t in your recordings and vice versa?
There's nothing like feeding off the energy of a crowd and just being in the moment. We always try to do something to make each other laugh onstage and have as much fun as possible. I think people enjoy watching us do that.
7-
Your live performances are energetic and fun . How have you cultivated your physical presence during performance?
What do you feel like you embody as a performer when you’re on stage?
I think we have some real energy on stage and people that
watch us leave knowing we gave it our all. We have an amazing front man (Dimmy)
that gives the same performance regardless of crowd size. But most of all its
what we love doing and we always have fun. I think people see that when
watching us.
8-
Does your creativity help you connect to and navigate or
deal with the world?
Personally it's how I (Jim)
deal with everything. Music is such an emotional and healing process and
its hard to explain to those who don't do it the benefits it provides.
9-
What are some of your highlights of your career so far? And
what is happening next?
We never had any expectations other than doing some shows
and maybe an EP. But we are now signed with Wormholedeath records, which we
never saw coming so that was a big surprise. We have featured in quite a few
magazines around the world and our first EP had lots of positive reviews.
Deadman our new one is also going really well and we are so proud of it, its a
true reflection of us in general. Our fanbase is growing and opportunities are increasing so plenty of highlights.
As far as what's next, we are already writing new songs and
have a different strategy this year. While we just released 2 EPs in 12 months
we plan on just releasing singles in the next 12 months. We will finish a song
and then release it as we go. That way we feel we can be active all year and
change sounds and recording processes as we go. Hopefully we will do a music
video or two as well.
10.
Any bands or releases you can recommend at the moment?
I was very privileged to hear an almost completed new “Fall
& Resist” track and it was amazing, so I'm looking forward to that. Other
bands we would recommended are, The Ascended, Spacegoat, All This Filth, Van
Diemen, Get Rekt and Diminished Reason. All Aussie bands too.
11-
Final words to the fans and readers?
Keep an eye out for us in the next 12 months as there will
be plenty happening, and heaps of new material for you to listen to. Thanks to
everyone who has supported us or come to a show and even bought our merch, it's
very much appreciated.
Cheers
Jim
