Bear witness to BLACK PLANET: A Celebration of Australian Dark Music.
Descending for the first time as a full-spectrum gathering of darkness, Black Planet hosts 3 stages across two iconic venues: The Bendigo Hotel & Nighthawks. Built for devotees of sonic extremity and shadow culture, this inaugural edition transforms the night into a living cathedral of sound, atmosphere, and chaos.
The night will be separated into 3 spaces:
The Ossuary (Bendi Main Room) - A shrine to brutality and all things heavy
The Void (Bendi Upstairs) - A chamber devoted to noise, ambient, drone and experimental
The Black Hearts Lodge (Nighthawks) - A sanctuary of goth, darkwave, post-punk and nocturnal romance
Headlining Black Planet 2026 is THE AMENTA - One of metal's most uncategorizable acts, THE AMENTA have been synthesising the ugliest aspects of death, black, and noise into a unique maelstrom for over 25 years. Well-known across the world for their intense live shows, THE AMENTA combine speed, anger, and a weird sound with smoke and strobes to create a brutal, overwhelming experience.
Joining them across the 3 stages are: Mammon’s Throne, Hybrid Nightmares, Victoria K, Küntsquäd, Bentham’s Head, Knife, Npcede, Živa, Inaugural, Chiffon Magnifique, Blood In The Champagne, Dystropolis, Palliative, Blood of a Pomegranate, Military Position, Anocht, AnnaBortionist, Serene Ailment, Angellis Taliuu, and Koolooz.
The Ossuary's billing as a "shrine to brutality" undersells how much range sits inside that one room across the night — blackened extremity, doom-inflected death metal, and full-blown conceptual black metal all sharing the same stage across a few hours. Black Planet isn't just diverse room-to-room; it's diverse within its own rooms, which is a harder trick to pull off convincingly at this scale.
ARTIST: HYBRID NIGHTMARES
Hybrid Nightmares are a scintillating Melbourne progressive/black metal outfit who've been building an increasingly ambitious discography since 2007, best known for The Ages — a four-EP concept series released across 2015 — and 2017's debut full-length Almagest, a record built around Ptolemaic astronomy and cosmic horror in roughly equal measure. Their punishing sound has drifted from straight black metal into something harder to pin down: prog structures, death metal musicianship, and a signature totem — the Obelisk — that ties their mythology together across releases. Nearly two decades in, they remain one of Melbourne's most theatrically ambitious extreme metal exports, and a solid mid-bill anchor for the Ossuary's heaviest hours.

The Ossuary’s pitched as “a shrine to brutality.” What does brutality actually mean in what Hybrid Nightmares do?
Brutality isn’t just speed or volume. It’s themes, atmosphere, tension and impact. We want the music to feel oppressive and crush the listener exactly when we want it to, not just make music that’s arbitrarily heavy.

What do you bring that nobody else on the bill is bringing?
We lean heavily into atmosphere and unrelenting aggression. But our ritualistic performance is what usually brings the crowd into our world for the duration of the set. Hopefully people leave with a sense of catharsis.

Where does your latest release, or what’s next, fit into that “living cathedral of sound”?
That’s a description we really connect with. We’re always trying to build something immersive rather than just a collection of songs. There’s new material in the works that pushes further in that direction, and we have three of those new songs from our upcoming release in our current set.

What does “Australian” mean to Hybrid Nightmares? Why does this underground still matter?
Australia has produced some incredible extreme music, and it’s a scene built on passion rather than trends. That’s why it still matters. People are here because they genuinely care about the music
What are you trying to do to a room when you play?
Create an atmosphere people get completely absorbed in. Whether they’re standing still or in the pit, we want them to leave feeling like they experienced something.

What’s the inspiration and drive behind Hybrid Nightmares?
To keep evolving and making a show that feels like being hit in the face with a bloody shovel. The goal has never been to follow trends or the confines of our genre, but to explore misunderstood and taboo themes we humans can all relate to.
