Bear witness to BLACK PLANET: A Celebration of Australian Dark Music.
Descending for the first time as a full-spectrum gathering of darkness, Black Planet hosts 3 stages across two iconic venues: The Bendigo Hotel & Nighthawks. Built for devotees of sonic extremity and shadow culture, this inaugural edition transforms the night into a living cathedral of sound, atmosphere, and chaos.
The night will be separated into 3 spaces:
The Ossuary (Bendi Main Room) - A shrine to brutality and all things heavy
The Void (Bendi Upstairs) - A chamber devoted to noise, ambient, drone and experimental
The Black Hearts Lodge (Nighthawks) - A sanctuary of goth, darkwave, post-punk and nocturnal romance
Headlining Black Planet 2026 is THE AMENTA - One of metal's most uncategorizable acts, THE AMENTA have been synthesising the ugliest aspects of death, black, and noise into a unique maelstrom for over 25 years. Well-known across the world for their intense live shows, THE AMENTA combine speed, anger, and a weird sound with smoke and strobes to create a brutal, overwhelming experience.
Joining them across the 3 stages are: Mammon’s Throne, Hybrid Nightmares, Victoria K, Küntsquäd, Bentham’s Head, Knife, Npcede, Živa, Inaugural, Chiffon Magnifique, Blood In The Champagne, Dystropolis, Palliative, Blood of a Pomegranate, Military Position, Anocht, AnnaBortionist, Serene Ailment, Angellis Taliuu, and Koolooz.
Twenty-one acts, three rooms, one night — the scale of Black Planet only works if the bill has actual depth rather than just breadth, and the Ossuary's lower and mid slots are where that depth shows. This isn't headliner-and-filler; acts with genuine critical momentum are playing well before the main set times, which says something about how seriously this bill was put together.
ARTIST: BENTHAM'S HEAD
Bentham's Head are a five-piece progressive sludge/post-metal outfit out of Naarm who've built a rapid reputation since forming in 2023 — selling out every headline show since their first gigs and landing widespread critical praise for 2024's debut full-length Blood, Salt and Ash, a seven-track record built from narrative-driven songs about struggle on the frontiers of civilisation. Reviewers have reached for Mastodon's sludge and The Ocean Collective's atmosphere as reference points, though the band's own blend of black, doom and post-metal resists tidy comparison. A relatively early Ossuary slot for a band that's already sold out rooms on their own name. The abrasive nature of this room suits this sensational band with its grim, yet dynamic nature.
INTERVIEW:
1. The Ossuary's pitched as "a shrine to brutality." Heaviness gets used as a blunt word a lot — what does brutality actually mean in what Bentham's Head do? Is it physical, sonic, emotional, all three?
Our tracks are lyrically and musically very narrative-driven, and we try to use this as a framework upon which we constantly add sonic layers, conjuring the emotion of the story behind the song and building slowly, but surely towards our moments of heaviness and brutality. We also use contrasting ambience and quiet sections to make our more brutal sections hit with even more weight than they otherwise would. Hopefully these things make our audience feel heaviness in all those ways you’ve described!

2. What do you bring into that room that nobody else on the Ossuary bill is bringing?
The contrast between quiet and heavy, and the strong narrative journey of our songs bring a unique Post-Metal flavour to the bill. Our music draws on many genres of the metal world, death, doom, black, sludge and so on… We hope they’ll be something for most listeners to enjoy during our set.

3. Black Planet's being pitched as a "living cathedral of sound" — where does your most recent release, or whatever's next in the pipe, sit inside that? Anything dropping around the show we should know about first?
We are currently in the final stages of production for a cover of a deep-cut Aussie rock classic, so, in that regard, we are trying our best to honour the past and let it inspire us onwards. No release date yet, but keep your ears peeled…

4. This is billed as a celebration of Australian dark music specifically. What does that qualifier — Australian — actually mean to what Bentham's Head does, if anything? And why does this underground still matter to you, this far in?
Alongside our cover song, we try to maintain a strong connection to Australia through our songs, influence and art. Our track “Isle of the Dead” retells a story of convict life in Van Diemen’s Land, and the art for our album “Blood, Salt and Ash” displays art from South Australia, we’ve made an active choice to be an Australian metal band, and honour what that means. We’ve all been going to gigs in Melbourne and beyond for years, keeping our eyes and ears on the awesome scene here, and we hope to continue honouring its distinct style going forward.
5. Bendigo and Nighthawks are two venues, three rooms, one night. What are you actually trying to do to a room when you play it — what's the physical or psychic effect you're chasing?
We want to drag our audience into that narrative journey we’re conjuring. We want them to feel the song in a visceral way, for it to get inside them and immerse them in the music as fully as possible.

6. Your music is a real battle between tempos, and is filled with tension-what is the focus or goal with each release and more so in the live setting?
Dynamics and contrast are really important in our songwriting. We go fast so the slow that follows feels sludgier, and quiet so that the crescendo hits even harder. It’s what makes our big moments arrive with more weight than they otherwise would, and helps keep people engaged with the music and really feel the story we’re trying to tell.
