Exhumed exists because Matt Harvey apparently cannot stop, will not stop, and frankly, you'd be a fool to want him to. Since 1990 — out of San Jose, through lineup changes and label shifts and the full brutal grind of keeping a death metal band alive across four decades — Exhumed have remained one of the most honest propositions in extreme music. No reinvention for reinvention's sake. No pivot toward palatability. Just the blood, the riffs, and the commitment to a very specific and very deranged vision of what heavy music can be. Plus, he is an awesome bloke!!!.

Thirty-five years in, and Exhumed are still one of the most uncompromising bands on the planet. No softening, no nostalgia mode, no interest in being anything other than exactly what they are. Red Asphalt — out now on Relapse Records — is another proof of concept: deathgrind built like a vehicle with the steering cut, moving fast and leaving wreckage.

Red Asphalt, their latest via Relapse Records, doubles down on everything that makes this band what they are — hook-laden deathgrind/goregrind that hits with the momentum of a truck losing its brakes on a mountain road. It's not subtle. It was never going to be subtle. That's the point.

We got on a Zoom with mastermind Matt Harvey ahead of the band's Australian and New Zealand run to talk about the tour, the record, 35 years of keeping this thing alive, and whatever the hell else came up at 7am. It's a good one.
