There's a moment early in Cone of Silence where the doom hits without warning—no build, no posturing, just immediate weight. Then it pulls back, leaving space for a voice that refuses to armour up. This is Axon Breeze's third single, and it's their heaviest yet, but not in the way you'd expect.

Vocalist and guitarist JR Brennan has spent the past year deep in the Caribbean and Mexico, mixing their debut album far from any traditional rock geography. That displacement shows. Cone of Silence lands somewhere between Pink Floyd's expansive psychedelia and the brutalist thump of post-punk—think The Stranglers' menacing bass lines filtered through garage rock grit and electroclash shimmer.

The sublime vocals sit in this strange, perfect pocket: crisp but abrasive, layered with an alternative pop sensibility that shouldn't work with riffs this crushing, but absolutely does. And at times, there is an almost early Danzig type vocal throwback that I adored, as well as the previously mentioned stylistic and crafty vocal acrobatics of The Stranglers.

What Axon Breeze is doing here aligns with the anti-macho heaviness that US acts like Chat Pile and Agriculture have been excavating—big feelings delivered without the tired tropes of either emo catharsis or metal machismo. It's "post-masculine, tough, and domestically erotic," as their press materials put it.  Doom with the lights on.

And those breaks in tension—god, those breaks. They don't offer relief so much as grim excitement, a startling anticipation that keeps you locked in. Each single from this duo feels like calculated cruelty, teasing a full album that promises to be genuinely groundbreaking.

The music video, shot in a Belizean fishing village, drops a week or so after the single on January 27. If you've seen their previous visuals, you already know this matters. And as alwayss it will be a cinematic masterpiece, again.

Axon Breeze isn't reinventing heavy music—they're stripping it down to something more honest, more vulnerable, and somehow more devastating because of it.
