Bruxist is a phenomenal band that has members that from past and current demigods: Damaged, Terrorust, Altars, Earth, Encircling Sea, Azoth, YLVA, Clagg, Terrorust, Clagg, Order of Chaos, Bleakwood, etc. So one would expect a band of sublime and barbaric quality. And rest assured, this ferocious band dropped a debut of unrelenting perfection.

I chatted with their guitarist/vocalist, Terry, who has numerous musical accomplishments. We had a solid conversation about his extensive and varied musical endeavours, including the newest band, Bruxist.

We discussed:

-many of Terry's other non-heavy musical bands like Subterranean Disposition, Vainoras and the altar of the drill, Senketsu No Night Club, etc
-touched on his musical journey and his time in Damaged, Order of Chaos Earth, etc.
-why variety and eclectic musical taste is so essential

-how Bruxist came about
-the songs from ideas to recording
-the purpose and aims of this band

-important Aussie extreme metal bands and their influence
-the various styles and musical history of members that make up the unique Bruxist sound
-we discussed some killer songs from the album and the varied song structure, and the variety on the album
-the first gig in Adelaide for the final Matt Skitz performance and his legacy

-what is coming up next for the band
and much more musical deep dives!!!

BRUXIST-SELF TITLED ALBUM REVIEW:

Brux's self-titled album consists of eight tracks, very much in the vein of D-beat bands like Wolf Brigade and Tragedy, but also some old-school crust influences. The first epic track, Inversion, dips into tense, chaotic riffs and maniacal vocals. A mix of Negative Approach and Infest meets Mike Patton's more deranged works. The three vocals from each member work so well together on this and across the release. The band is exceptionally tight and you can hear the influence of black metal mixed with 90s death metal or extreme metal, whilst being definitely underpinned by hardcore. Hell of a start to an album!.

The longest track on this album is only four minutes and 39 seconds, but every song is absolutely turbulent and pacey. But I love how the songwriting is not basic at all, and despite this being the core of most crust and D-beat bands, there are tons of twists and turns into many side genres. It's such a pleasurable encounter, like Six Feet Headfirst dives into black metal and equally classic mathcore. This track punctuates the need for non-linear tempos and structure. Black Sheep Discipline, like other tracks, tricks you into immediate head nods to the thick riffs, but then it escalates with biting changes: be it vocal layering or a surprise breakdown or a galloping war-like tempo shifts to keep things miles away from any chance of stagnation.

Same as the vocal variety, varying from borderline spoken word pieces, rock and roll style vocal harmonising and even clean vocals mixed with standard death metal and crust vocals. Wide Awake is almost a standard warning label for this entire album, but also the title of the next track. It's a frenzied musical feast with maddening beats, hefty bass and drums that are meaty and solid foundations into crafty yet heavy chaos evident in this track. Vocally, as hinted at before, Terry drifts into one of these many vocal stylings, with an absolutely fervent approach.

Piss and Vinegar begins like a chunky motorhead D-beatanthem, but diverts into berserk death grind in the style of Lock Up or Pig Destroyer etc. I love how it threatens to go off the rails at any moment. This uncertainty keeps all the songs fresh, and that Mr. Bungle-like vibe in the vocals and across many tracks is a huge standout or selling point to the listener.

Average or mediocre is not a word in this band's vocabulary. Revoked is one of my utter faves for this release. It has a riveting death metal, sludge, death and roll vibe that stands out, it's nasty but rocks hard. Super impressive guitar work across this banger. And quite the extensive music journey this track is, as it utilises its longer song length to its advantage, like the sluggish pace from about 2 minutes 40 seconds. This downtempo, drawn out audio majesty; utterly kicks your collective ass with its wild John Zorn jazzy metal wig out that is intriguing and psychotic whilst being a mini extensive metal opera. All worship Bruxist!.

Divide and Conquer, this is an underground meaty Japanese crust meets OSDM in a cagefight. And unconditionally showcases Dan's drumming finesse and also the overall high-level skill set of the entire band with hyperfocus on the superhuman ability to write a catchy track. Plus, yet another wild and riotous insane ending. Plus, suffocating vibes like a death metal version of Faith No More.

Hydra is the ferocious closing track. It has a beguilingly different approach that was brilliant. Almost a rockish and grunge double punch mixed with their confident death and roll style like Entombed and Carcass etc. It's absolutely one that flies straight out of the gates, but has so much depth. Quite a modern black metal feel on this also, particularly the wild, dramatic and atmospheric section around the 3.20 minute mark that was crazy and also cerebral and grimly crushing. The highlights of this record are solidly unhinged vocals, drumming that's insanely boisterous but also shows a lot of restraint and yet remains psychosic. Endless brooding and very punishing bass lines mix well with abundant downshifts in tempo, with outstanding guitar performances and songwriting splendour. Great album on every level and an instant classic.
