REMAINS ALBUM LAUNCH - FRIDAY, JULY 25TH

When Australian Death/Grind Legends Prove They Give Zero Fucks About Trends

The underground was buzzing all week—Remains were finally launching Grinding From the Grave, and every extreme metal devotee worth their battle jacket knew this would be special. What we got was a masterclass in deathgrind brutality, infectious humour, and pure professional excellence that reminded everyone why these supergroup veterans have been crushing skulls for decades.

THE NIGHT UNFOLDS:

NEPHALEM opened the assault with their crossover hardcore fury that had the early crowd throwing fists from the opening riff.

These legends brought that loose, anthemic quality that feels akin to a classic hardcore band covering (Wolverine Blues era) Entombed- awesome chunky crossover that hits like a brick to the teeth. Their energy was infectious, setting the perfect foundation for the carnage to follow.

BLACK JESUS took the stage next with blackened hardcore venom laced with '90s grind/death influence that had the pit stirring to violent life.

Their crushing assault balanced blast beat chaos with hardcore groove, getting the crowd properly warmed up and bloodthirsty. By the time their final breakdown hit, the room was primed for total annihilation.

Unfortunately, HAEMATESIS couldn't make it due to illness—sending healing vibes to those sick legends.

REMAINS: THE DEATHGRIND MASTERS AT WORK

Then came the moment everyone was waiting for. REMAINS—featuring battle-tested brutalizers from Blood Duster, Captain Cleanoff, and The Kill—hit the stage and immediately reminded every person in attendance why they're considered among Australia's finest extreme metal exports. This isn't some young crew trying to prove how brutal they can be—these are seasoned veterans who've been perfecting their craft for decades.

From the explosive opening track, it was clear we were witnessing something special. The beauty of Remains lies in their complete lack of pretension. While other bands pile on unnecessary technicality or atmospheric wankery, these guys stick to what works: crushing riffs, blast beats that sound like machine gun fire, and vocals that seem genuinely pissed off about existence.

The Grinding From the Grave material sounded absolutely massive live. "Grinding Fury" lived up to its name, delivering two minutes of controlled chaos that felt like being caught in a cement mixer. "All Smashed Up" and "Knife In Your Skull" showcased the band's ability to marry old-school death metal's chunky brutality with grindcore's manic energy, like hearing Brutal Truth and Napalm Death having a bar fight where everyone wins.

You could hear decades of experience in every crushing moment. The production translated perfectly live, letting every pummeling drum hit land while keeping the guitars appropriately filthy. The rhythm section deserves special mention for keeping this locomotive of destruction on track—that organic, slightly unhinged feel that makes you believe these songs could collapse into beautiful chaos at any moment, but they never do.

But what really made this night special was the band's distinctly Australian larrikin attitude to their brutality. Between songs, their banter had the crowd in stitches—self-deprecating jokes about technical difficulties, extreme genre quips, and genuine appreciation for everyone who showed up. They struck that perfect balance between taking their music seriously while never taking themselves too seriously. There's something uniquely Aussie about delivering bone-crushing deathgrind with a cheeky grin.

This supergroup chemistry was undeniable. These aren't just four guys playing together—this is a well-oiled extreme metal machine operating at peak brutality, channelling decades of collective experience into 30 minutes of perfectly crafted violence.

THE VERDICT:

This album launch proved beyond any doubt why Remains deserve their reputation as Australian extreme metal royalty. Their combination of jaw-dropping deathgrind savagery, complete honesty, and infectious personality creates something rare in today's oversaturated scene—a band that simply gives no fucks about trends or your opinion.

Grinding From the Grave isn't trying to be the most technical or atmospheric extreme metal album of the year. Instead, it's a master class in how seasoned veterans channel decades of experience into pure, unfiltered brutality. This launch reminded everyone that sometimes the best way to honour tradition is to beat it senseless.

For every metalhead who thinks extreme metal has lost its teeth, Remains stands as proof that when Australian legends bring their full arsenal, magic happens. This was more than just an album launch—it was a reminder that deathgrind, when done by the right people, remains absolutely perfect.

The underground is lucky to have bands like Remains keeping the flame burning with zero compromise. If you missed this show, you fucked up. If you haven't grabbed Grinding From the Grave yet, what are you waiting for?
