Death by a 1000 Bullets: Review time Assholes!!! Praetorian, Hidden Intent, Bog Monster, Nothing and Forklift Assassins.

As reviewed by Mark Jenkins.

These are the dog bollocks, concise short reviews of shit you need to buy now. Got it, now read, buy and thank me later fuckface. We have a blindingly awesome selection of releases here. Let's go and get into these bangers. Heaps of amazing releases on this list!!!.

Praetorian-Pylon Cult. Fuck yes, what a crushing breath of dissonant fresh air.
This is their bio:
Building on three promising and acclaimed EPs, the menacing Hertfordshire quartet return with their debut full length album PYLON CULT. A new lesson in vile, disgusting and gruesome blackened sludge metal, mixed in a volatile cocktail of death metal, thrash and hardcore.

For once a accurate, bullshit free bio; now this band is grotty, gritty and currently the brits are doing it better than most; America is so average these days-in many, many ways, but this band is way better than most of dull septic tank dullness I hear. The eight tracks are a wild ride, and the pummeling journey is a schizo mix of slightly atmospheric quiet time overbalanced by mental abrasive, sludgy death metal with a doomy feel always there. The vocals range from hectic death style, melodic to raspy black metal-irritated vocal warfare. The secret sauce this band has is wicked variety in tempo and mixing up all the best extreme metal styles; plus having that chaos of raw punk/hardcore. even the slight deviation into grunge and Mastodon tangents worked so perfectly. The riffs, slower moments really show the high skills of this band, live they would be brilliant. The album's song placement/order is spot on and I loved how there was a more moderate pace in the middle, bookended by some of the band's heaviest tracks at its conclusion. Well recommended and will definitely be one of the year's best releases.

Hidden Intent-Terrorform. I will be the first to admit I am not a huge fan of thrash outside of the greats and Melbourne's own Bludger. Generally I find it too pedestrian and boring. Thankfully, Adelaide's Hidden Intent are lifting the standard. I think their previous works were decent enough but not to warrant immediate replaying for my fussy/gatekeeping ears. Terrorform is the album the band needed to release to sear their name into your arm. It is epicly huge on maddened riffs, but adds more aggressive tone, and the vocals are fantastic. The tempo is bananas as always, but the brilliant production on this is so monstrous, and it adds that punchy tone the band have been crying out for. Thrash ain't my fave, but the pace and energy reminds me of Mortal Sin, so you know this album is quality.

Bog Monster-Servants of the Necrosect. Yes, fuckos, I know this came out last year, but I believe its needs your attention. Bog Monster is a beast that just gets better with each release and these fuckers are killer live. I thought it was hard to top their last release, Hell is Full, but fuck me they have even gone one better with this album. I love how they add more brutality with each release. Death metal seems to be creeping in more and more, as does the warm blanket of Entombed worship in a doom-filled metal assault. The lyrics are brilliant and well-constructed. The album has so many classic bangers, and it sounds aggressive and groovy at the same time. A cracking band with great albums and brilliant live shows and with new releases and sick merch always on the horizon. Buy or die!!

Nothing-The Self Repair Manifesto. This is another band that never gets the hype and merits it deserves for its sensational body of work. I have admired this band for years and I adore their approach of progressive death metal. The premise for this gem of a album is a fucking wicked one: The Self Repair Manifesto is an ambitious concept album delving into a tale of survival and overcoming a narcissistic relationship inspired by real life events and a love of the classic poem A Divine Comedy.

Sorry no overdone gore or horror here, leave that to the demigods of Gutless. But even without the gore, Nothing will rip you a new one with this beast. Drums are as evil and asphyxiating as hell. The title track is a perfect mix of insane groove, raspy vocals and monstrous riffs. There is throughout a super dominating raw black metal vibe throughout, be it the mental tremolos, the laser accurate drum abuse or the pummeling bass. I also dig the pace variation and how many of their songs remind me of the best of the best Lamb of God tracks, no easy feat. But this is a band always push themselves forward and this is their best work, and they deserve to be a regular international support with this kind of demented classic. Stujnning record from a sublime band.
Essential and brilliant:

Forklift Assassins-Ripsnorter. Now if you live in Melbourne and haven't seen this band, you must go to some obscure venues as this band plays an unrelenting amount of shows all over Melbourne. Loosely labelled punk rock, I find they are in the definite Motorhead/DK's/Cosmic Psychos' vein of street rock, and they do it exceptionally well. The album is as energetic as the band is live. Whilst this is not something I would listen to regularly (but I am a fussy bastard who gatekeeps music like no one else), this deserves all the attention that crappy bands like Amyl and The Sniffers/The Chats etc get, this is the real deal. Every track is well written, clever pace treansitions and piss funny lyrics. And every track is catchy, frenzied and enjoyable as hell. Plus they are great blokes who are down to earth. Buy this for a good time!!
