Interview with Henri from God Dethroned and review of the killer new album The Judas Paradox.

By Mark Jenkins.

If you haven't heard about the dark wonders of this Dutch extreme metal force, I implore you to check out their entire catalogue. Failing that the new album The Judas Paradox will meet your needs if you have a love for any variation of death metal or black metal.

I was lucky enough last week to chat with the band's leader, the awesome Henri to chat all things related to the glorious band and their new album:

-the difference between the new album and previous works

-the importance of writing fresh tracks, not rehashing the past

-how Henri keeps each album fresh and vibrant

-the ongoing challenge of the band name and the subject matter in the lyrics

-the incredible concept of the new album

-how Henri loves to research information for new songs

-effort in the whole album process, flow and track listing etc

-mixing up the styles and tempo of the album

-importance of art and its intersection with the music

-what's next; future tours potentially Oz/NZ in 2025!!

and much more

God Dethroned-The Judas Paradox album review

This 12th album of Dutch extreme metal wizards God Dethroned dropped recently and it's a damn ripper. Henri not only slices your limbs off with his insane riffs and dark vocals, but he also recorded and mixed this album. Stylistically it runs along the aggressive lines of the last album Illuminati but with many surprises, as we expect on each GD album. New occult and historical-based factoids are dropped with the self-titled opener and it's twists and turns are wicked. The band really thrives in their blackened death metal genre-there is adequate melodic tone, but this is far from a melodic death metal band or sound. So many highlights here: singles Rat Kingdom and the Hanged Man both drip in OSDM brutality and the Morbid Angel tone is glorious. Asmodeus is a reimagined version of a previously dropped tune, and it's a savage black metal, skin-peeling anthem.

Kashmir Princess is a track that divides many, but if you aren't a fan do you even understand the complexity of variation and depth in modern metal. The electronic additions, combined with clever tempo and structure made me worship this track from the first listen. Hubris Anorexia is unhinged pure blackened grim metal in its finest form. Across the whole release are Henri's savage and raspy vocals combined with very competitive guitar riff warfare and crazed drums duelling with bombastic basslines straight from hell. The production is bold, dynamic and pleasingly not too modern sounding. My fave section on this release is the last three tracks, the old school frenetic headbanger classic Hailing Death(my fave on this album), Broken Bloodlines simply is a gory, dirty feast of Carcass meets Obituary in a fight to the death and the apocalyptic closer War Machine. This is why over their whole catalogue they leave Behemoth in the dust.

One of the best metal releases of the year!!!!!
