Beyond The Styx-Sentence album review. FFO: Chunky, crushing and meaty hardcore!!! The French are dropping some mad metallic hardcore over the last few years and are really creating a solid range of bands with power. Beyond The Styx is another masterful and gnarly band that is killer. From end to end, this is solid, riff-heavy hardcore that really borders on beatdown. The gruelling vocals match the intensity and sting of the guitar work. Tracks like New World Disorder and Self Hatred  show a real sense of life experienced pain and hardship, which results in epic tunes. I hear as much Bulldoze as Biohazard and even some First Blood, but this third release is very solid. The pace is decent, and the transitions in each track are smooth and also deeply aggressive. They also show tons of depth on tracks like Chain of Life, Machination and huge closer Cyclops . Combine this with hell-spawned heavy as fuck tracks like Scorch AD, ESC XIX and Collateral and you will be massively ov...

Acolyte-A Disciple Left in Darkness album. FFO: Gravelly, Acidic and glorious Black Metal. As I have strongly repeated, Australia has some of the best metal bands in the world and regardless of genre; we really excel at particularly extreme metal. Acolyte is a Black Metal band/ project made by members of a doom metal band and is based in Lismore, NSW. And this isn't your run of the mill generic copy of the BM masters-this has depth, warmth and so many dimensions to this great album. There is mostly excellent straight black metal on this release as well some articulate modern variations of this; with blackened and death metal twists. The vocals are crushing, but not over the top and the riffs are substantial, thick and weighty. Please also the majority of this release is one guy, except for the addition of drums. Now that's wild as hell. Also, the atmospheric synth touches were spot on and far from the cheesy variation on most black metal albums. Each track builds onto the nex...

Disgorge or Egrogsid-Sawn Off Throat Gun album review. FFO: Brutal, Unrelenting classic Grindcore. There is no doubt and if there is, feel free to contact me for a debate that you cannot win, but THE 90'S ERA AUSSIE HARDCORE/GRIND/METAL IS SIMPLY UNBEATABLE. Totally free of bullshit and the sheer breadth of amazing bands takes your breath away and for us old bastards who have seen these bands/played in bands or was part of that community we were lucky as hell. There is not enough room here to list all the incredible bands; but my faves were Warp Spasm/Beanflipper, Christbait, Tutti Parze, Subversion, Bastard Squad, Unclean, Toe to Toe, Mindsnare, Damaged, Magnicide and so many more. But at the same time Australia, particularly with the legendary band Warsore really set the standard for uncompromising and also punk as hell dirty, punishing grind.  And around that era were some sick grindcore bands that really were dedicated to the original aims of grindcore; to destroy your e...
