BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT: "WE JUST WANT IT TO FEEL HONEST" — AN EXCLUSIVE DEVIL'S HORNS ZINE INTERVIEW BY MARK JENKINS, CORNER HOTEL, MELBOURNE
BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT: "WE JUST WANT IT TO FEEL HONEST" — AN EXCLUSIVE DEVILS HORNS ZINE INTERVIEW, CORNER HOTEL, MELBOURNE
Fifteen minutes. Post-soundcheck. Corner Hotel back room, Richmond. That's all it took for Blackwater Holylight to remind you exactly why some bands cut through everything else.
What was supposed to be a Zoom interview weeks ago — lost to a technical failure that still stings — became something better: Sunny Faris and the band, in person, fresh off soundcheck, completely unpretentious and entirely present. No PR filter, no rehearsed answers. Just four people who make genuinely heavy, genuinely beautiful music talking about it like it matters to them — because it does.
In the time we had, we covered the push and pull at the heart of Not Here Not Gone — restraint against aggression, light dragged through dark water — and why this record finally lets the doom and the shoegaze run simultaneously without either flinching. We talked about the violin, the synths, the collaborative threads that run through their catalogue; about what Roadburn felt like with an album barely four months old; about a brief Australian run that's already earned its place in the tour diary. There were unexpected connections to local underground royalty, genuine laughter, and the kind of candour you don't always get even in a two-hour sit-down.
Exclusive to Devil's Horns Zine. Fifteen minutes that earned every second.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
A huge thank you to Sunny Faris for her generosity and good grace — she didn't have to make this happen after the technical disaster that preceded it, and she did it without a second thought. That says everything about who she is. Thanks also to the rest of the band for giving their time so freely post-soundcheck. To Mike and the Birds Robe crew, and in particular to Lucille, for locking in the logistics and making the whole thing run smoothly on the night. And to the staff at Corner Hotel for making the space work — one of Melbourne's great rooms, run by people who clearly give a damn. Cannot wait for the next record and the next tour. Get back here soon.
